Uptown Aglow: 13 Photos From the Harlem Holiday Lights Parade and Columbia's Manhattanville Tree Lighting
Here's a look at a collection of photos from the two festive Uptown holiday events.
Every November, the center of Harlem lights up with magical holiday lights, and this year was no different. Uptown celebrations like the 125th Street Business Improvement District's Harlem Holiday Lights parade and Lights on the Plaza on Columbia's Manhattanville campus add a festive flair to the neighborhood streetscape and highlight the joy of community.
Lights on the Plaza kicked off the night of Nov. 18 with a tree lighting, live music, and hot cocoa on Columbia’s Manhattanville campus, just steps from the start of the parade route at 125th Street and Broadway. Later in the evening, the Harlem Holiday Lights parade began its regal procession down 125th Street—complete with a Columbia float.
From Manhattanville to East Harlem, neighbors gathered to celebrate the season with festive music, decorative floats, and cups of hot cocoa.
The theme of this year's parade was "Culture, Community, Connections." Award-winning actor and Harlem native Malik Yoba, as well as the legendary Apollo Theater, were dubbed grand marshals of the parade.
Columbia University had the pleasure of joining the 125th Street Business Improvement District, the Apollo Theater, Community Boards 9 and 10, and many other amazing partners and sponsors who made the event possible this year.
On Nov. 6 at the Lee C. Bollinger Forum, the 125th Street BID, Columbia University, and Community Board 9 co-hosted the Harlem Holiday Lights Legacy Awards, honoring Pastor Michael A. Walrond Jr., Senior Pastor of First Corinthian Baptist Church.
