The holiday season illuminates the power of service. Whether it’s a neighbor rolling up their sleeves to help stock a pantry or a local center hosting a gathering for elders, acts of kindness across the community underscore the significance of community care. This Thanksgiving, as food insecurity rises nationwide, beloved local businesses, grassroots community groups, and neighborhood nonprofits are leading projects designed to spread light and offer hope.

From a Thanksgiving-themed party for older adults in Washington Heights to a meal distribution for families in Harlem, we've curated a list of local Thanksgiving drives and celebrations for Uptown residents.

Harlem Grown has long been a champion of food justice Uptown, and this Thanksgiving, the nonprofit is advancing its mission to ensure community members have access to nutritious meal options. The organization will provide free, farm-to-table-inspired meal kits with holiday dining essentials for local families. Each kit includes a frozen turkey, seasonal savory and sweet sides, and fresh produce. 

To inspire folks to channel their inner chef, Harlem Grown has curated a collection of side dish recipes, which include sautéed collard greens and Harlem Grown-style stuffing.

NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi North Central Bronx is centering community wellness this holiday season through its food assistance initiatives. The hospital’s Perioperative Professional Nursing Council team and the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center—a nonprofit focused on education, healthcare, youth development, employment, and other social services in underserved North Bronx neighborhoods—are partnering to host a holiday-inspired food giveaway for local residents at the hospital’s Jacobi campus. Community members can pick up Thanksgiving meals while supplies last.

When it comes to Thanksgiving feasts, turkeys are often the star of the table. This year, the NYPD's 26th Precinct Community Affairs Bureau is helping ensure local families have one for the holiday. The precinct, which serves the Morningside Heights and Manhattanville neighborhoods, is partnering with the West Harlem Development Corporation to host a food distribution. Ahead of Thanksgiving, neighbors can stop by the precinct to pick up a free frozen turkey while supplies last.

Since opening Melba's along Harlem’s Restaurant Row 20 years ago, culinary visionary Melba Wilson has used the beloved Southern-style eatery as a vessel for community impact. From leading local hunger relief efforts at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to organizing grassroots projects to address food insecurity in Harlem, the neighborhood gem has consistently stepped up to support those in need.

This holiday season, Melba's is continuing its legacy with its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway. As a gesture of gratitude and pride for the community where Melba was born and raised, Wilson and several other surprise special guests will distribute 800 turkeys for neighbors to add comfort food magic to their main course meals this Thanksgiving.

Beyond the turkeys and pies, the holiday season is the perfect time of year to explore the local arts scene. This Thanksgiving, a group of Uptown nonprofits is organizing cultural celebrations where neighbors can connect. Among them, the Washington Heights-based Star Older Adult Center, which will host a holiday-inspired party for local seniors. The festive fête will feature a live performance from the band Sonido Magico as part of the New York City Department for the Aging and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s "Arts for the Stars" concert series, along with raffles, delicious eats, and other surprises.

Community empowerment is at the core of the mission of the National Action Network (NAN). The Harlem-based civil rights organization, founded by Rev. Al Sharpton, is hosting its annual Thanksgiving celebration to combat local food insecurity and spread holiday cheer. During the event at the House of Justice headquarters in Harlem, NAN will distribute hot meals. Attended by Uptown elected officials and community leaders, the gathering offers neighbors a chance to mix, mingle, and experience a true sense of togetherness. Two days prior to the Thanksgiving event, on Nov. 25, NAN will host a free turkey distribution for local residents.

On Thanksgiving Day, Goddard Riverside’s Older Adult Community Center will host a holiday luncheon where neighbors—including those who are unhoused—can stop by its dining room for a free and festive meal. The event is part of the Upper West Side nonprofit’s Holiday Meals project, a 40-year-old community-driven initiative that provides food to neighbors in need during Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day through dining events and meal deliveries. Holiday Meals is powered by contributions from local businesses, corporate partners, and the generosity of volunteers.
