"To learn to read is to light a fire”

Victor Hugo

Read Ahead ignites a love of reading in young students through mentoring, improving their confidence as well as their odds for success in school and life. Since 1991, Read Ahead has partnered volunteer mentors with elementary school students throughout New York City for one-on-one lunchtime reading-based mentoring sessions. Through the over 15,000 lunch hours spent annually in Read Ahead, our students develop confidence and other social and emotional skills crucial for success.

Read Ahead invites Columbia faculty, staff, and students to become volunteer mentors in our reading-based mentoring program. Volunteers are paired with students at an elementary school near Columbia to mentor and read one-on-one with the same student for the duration of the child’s school year.  Columbia has been partnering with Read Ahead (formerly Everybody Wins!/Power Lunch) for 17 years with mentors at PS 36 and PS 125 (both schools at 123rd & Amsterdam Ave). If you’re interested in this Program, please fill out the form at this link http://readahead.org/volunteer/ and Read Ahead will be in touch with all needed info about training and next steps

Read Ahead is an independent organization, and is not an affiliate of Columbia University.  To contact the Foundation directly, please visit their web site at www.readahead.org., or email [email protected].
