5+ Photos From a Celebration of Columbia's 12th Cohort of A'Lelia Bundles Community Scholars
On Oct. 17, Bundles Scholars old and new came together in Faculty House to welcome the 12th cohort.
On Oct. 17, A'Lelia Bundles Community Scholars came together at Faculty House on Columbia University's Morningside campus to welcome the 12th cohort of scholars.
Bundles Scholars are members of the Upper Manhattan community who receive a three-year affiliation with Columbia and access to campus resources while they complete work towards a project or skill that relates to or benefits their community. The scholars join an intellectual collective with the other program participants and can connect with the University's various academic and research-based resources.
After remarks from Deborah Sack, Vice President of Operations in the Office of Public Affairs, three of the five 2024 scholars introduced their research interests and projects:
- Cathleen Campbell, a film producer and documentarian, will work to create a new interactive series that honors Harlem's history by combining photos, short films, and texts that pay tribute to the past.
- Joseph Malik Suba Turner, an entrepreneur, will continue to develop the Just Make Scholars Program with a focus on cultivating the holistic development of young men from the local community through academics and the sport of basketball.
- Roslyn Walker, an experienced project manager, will design a mentorship program to help New York City moms whose kids are college students while also incarcerated in New York State prisons.
George Calderaro, Director of Community Relations at the School of Professional Studies, also spoke about the Community Scholars Lecture Series, which will return on Dec. 4 with a panel featuring Chris Lawrence (Cohort 11), who will discuss the potential for intergenerational work to support seniors and offer them more ways to flourish.
Former scholars as well as Columbia staffers and members of the Incite Institute team, who are in their first year of offering the Bundles Scholars program enhanced funding, mentorship, skill-building, and networking opportunities, were also on hand to welcome the new cohort, network, share ideas, and connect.
Here are a few photos from the evening that highlight the excitement around this year's new scholars:
