Celebrated community leader and lifelong Uptown resident Lloyd A. Williams, Harlem Week co-founder and CEO of The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC), passed away on Aug. 5, 2025, at 80.

Following his passing, GHCC Executive Director Winston Majette released a statement about his impactful legacy, sharing that Williams "worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life and shape both the cultural and economic identity of not just Harlem but the city as whole."

Williams spent more than five decades shaping Harlem’s future while honoring its past as an indefatigable advocate for the neighborhood's economic, artistic, and cultural vitality. Williams also worked closely with Columbia University to build meaningful, lasting partnerships between the institution and the Harlem community.

In 1974, Williams co-founded Harlem Week (initially Harlem Day) alongside Voza Rivers, Percy Sutton, and others, but over the years, transformed the single-day celebration into an a weeks-long showcase of the neighborhood's excellence. In 2022, Williams sat down with Neighbors to reflect on the legacy of the cultural institution.

Harlem Week is currently running in its 51st year with the theme "Celebrate Our Magic" and continues through Aug. 17, a testament to Williams' enduring impact and belief in the power of community.
