Five Cultural Events to Add to Your 'Harlem Week 2025' Itinerary
This year's theme is 'Celebrate Our Magic.'
A sensational Uptown summer season wouldn't be complete without Harlem Week. Since its inception in 1974, the highly anticipated annual celebration, which started as a single day and evolved into a nearly monthlong series of events, has been a symbol of cultural pride and community empowerment.
This year, the programming for the hybrid festival, themed "Celebrate Our Magic," is rooted in reverence and remembrance. Thousands of people from across the globe will gather to celebrate the beauty of the neighborhood through an array of cultural festivities and honor the legacy of one of its visionaries, Lloyd A. Williams, who passed away on Aug. 5, 2025, at 80.
From candid community conversations that will explore Harlem's influence on the world of fashion, to the iconic 135th Street Harlem Day block party, Columbia Neighbors has rounded up a few events to check out during this year's lively celebration, which runs through Aug. 17.

From the late legendary Grand Slam champion Althea Gibson (who grew up along Lenox Avenue) to Uptown spaces like the Cosmopolitan Tennis Club, where sports, culture, and community collided during the Harlem Renaissance, Upper Manhattan’s ties to the sport of tennis run deep. During this year’s Harlem Week festivities, All‑Love Racquet Club, the local nonprofit Marcus Meets Malcolm, USTA Eastern, Dreamers Youth Foundation, and Wilson Sporting Goods will transform 120th Street into an al fresco tennis club where attendees can enjoy free mini-court matches, skills clinics, communal wellness sessions, live music spun by local DJs, neighborhood eats, games, giveaways, and more.
The all-day, community-driven event—dubbed Tennis in Harlem: On the Block—is open to all ages and skill levels, and racquets will be provided. Whether you’re looking to level up your skills so you can serve like Serena Williams, or you’ve been waiting for the perfect opportunity to don your Challengers-inspired tenniscore outfit this summer, make your way over to this one-of-a-kind Uptown block party.

From its annual youth conference to virtual storytime sessions for little ones, a large component of Harlem Week is the curation of culturally relevant, enriching events for youngsters to experience the power of community. This year, the NYC Children's Festival is making its grand return to the Uptown celebration. The two-day party, geared toward youth ages 5 to 12, will deliver a dose of country flair with an opening ceremony and parade inspired by the viral “Boots on the Ground” line dance.
During the festival, which will take place at Howard Bennett Playground, children and their families can enjoy performances by dance troupes, step teams, poets, singers, arts and crafts workshops, face painting, Double Dutch competitions, and more. The event also offers the opportunity for families to learn about local community resources, spanning from education to health care.

Harlem Day was built on the pillars of cultural and economic empowerment, and this massive block party is a celebratory return to the festival’s roots. Designed to uplift local entrepreneurship and shine a light on the vibrancy of Harlem’s arts and culture scene, this year’s fête—which will stretch across the 135th Street corridor—will feature a moving tribute to the music visionary Quincy Jones, riveting Broadway play performances, and immersive experiential activations curated by local organizations and institutions, including the Apollo Theater’s The Art of the Mix lab.
Attendees will also be able to soak up the sounds of local and international music artists, shop products created by Uptown artisans and makers, indulge in the diverse flavors of Harlem’s food scene, and explore the wellness pop-up, Harlem Health Village. Harlem Day captures the essence of the beloved neighborhood’s cultural legacy and impact, locally and globally.
