Through the initiative of Roberto Herrera, local children have the opportunity to access indoor rock climbing through an innovative youth mentorship program. The Harlem Rock Club includes climbing instruction guided by an evidence-based youth development curriculum to positively impact participants’ academic and social-emotional learning. The program combines fun, experiential learning and healthy physical activity with team and social skill-building opportunities. Groups of children from FamilyWorks Harlem, Brotherhood Sister-Sol, and St.Mary’s Episcopal Church have already taken part in the program. The program takes place at Steep Rock Bouldering, one of the retail tenants at the Jerome L. Greene Science Center at Columbia's Manhattanville campus.
