Inaugural COSMOS Community Stakeholder Meeting

May 06, 2019

Approximately one year after the April 2018 announcement of the Cloud–Enhanced Open Software-defined Mobile-Wireless Testbed for City-Scale Deployment, or COSMOS project, members from the research team organized the first COSMOS community stakeholder meeting.  These stakeholder meetings are intended to facilitate communication, transparency and meaningful engagement between the community and the COSMOS team.

COSMOS is a five-year project funded by the National Science Foundation with the aim to develop, deploy, and operate an advanced wireless research testbed in New York City, specifically in West Harlem. The team consists of academic partners from Columbia, NYU, Rutgers, the City of New York, Silicon Harlem, City College of New York (CCNY), and a large group of industrial partners.

During this first community stakeholder meeting, special emphasis was placed on the 2018 COSMOS Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program. The RET program is an ongoing professional development opportunity for middle and high school science, math, computer science, and engineering teachers in New York City.  Stakeholders heard firsthand from the first cohort of teachers as they gave accounts of the experimental research they conducted over the summer. The teachers also shared their classroom experiences in implementing the labs they designed over the summer using the toolkits they were gifted.

Applications for the 2019 COSMOS RET program are currently being accepted on a rolling basis.
