Construction Update: Weeks of 5/24/21 and 5/31/21

What is Happening

Columbia Business School

Site 7 (Western Site)

  • Completion of exterior wall glass-fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) unit installations on floors 4 through 11
  • Fire system testing is occurring on Monday, May 24 at 2:30 p.m. to confirm fire riser pressure.  While the testing is performed, a hose will pour water off the top of the building onto W. 131th Street.  Flag people will be available to direct pedestrian and vehicular traffic.  
  • Exterior wall water testing will take place the week of May 24. All testing will take place inside the construction site.
  • Preparation and installation of exterior glass doors
  • Interior fit-outs (walls, glass partitions, ceilings, flooring, millwork, GFRG) and overhead mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) installation on floors 1 through 11

Site 6B (Eastern Site)

  • Completion of exterior wall GFRC unit installations on floors 2 through 8
  • Preparation and installation of exterior glass doors
  • Interior fit-outs (walls, glass partitions, ceilings, flooring, millwork, GFRG) and overhead MEP installation on floors 2 through 8
  • Three construction use cars are in service

Below Grade Activity / W. 131st Street Utilities

  • Installation of permanent lighting, electrical outlets and devices, security cameras, and wireless access points
  • Installation of toilet and plumbing fixtures
  • Fire alarm testing is complete
  • Buildout work of the loading dock is progressing
  • Metal panel comeback work is substantially complete
  • Spackling and painting walls are ongoing throughout
  • The truck ramp ceiling is substantially complete
  • Installation of acoustic ceiling tile ceiling.  Countertops and ceramic tiling are complete.  Painting is ongoing.

Open Spaces between 130th and 131st Streets and along 12th Avenue

  • Continuation of living roof layer
  • Structural backfill, rebar, form work, and concrete topping slab ongoing
  • Installation of electrical conduit, cobblestone, and trench drain.  Hanover pavers/hardscape to commence

600 W. 125th Street

  • This phase of the remnant wall project for the adjacent property, 31 Tiemann Place, is complete.  Wall repairs, wall modifications, and egress stair changes are complete. 
  • The excavation and foundations contractor will begin excavation for the support of excavation (SOE) systems and will begin SOE installation the week of May 31
  • Con Edison is performing utility improvement work on W. 125th Street, west of Broadway

What to Expect

Construction Activity

  • Regular weekday work hours: 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday work hours: 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After-hours permit issued for 6:00 a.m. construction start to allow for physical distancing for workers upon entry to the site.  After-hours permit issued for 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for exterior wall installation to be performed at the Business School buildings.
  • Material deliveries to site is ongoing

Temporary Traffic and Transportation Impacts

  • Refer to street signage for the west side of Broadway from 129th to 130th Streets -- parking is allowed after 6:00 p.m. and on weekends
  • W. 131st Street between Broadway and 12th Avenue is open for one-way westbound traffic
  • The parking lane will be closed on the south side of W. 125th Street from Broadway to St. Clair Place.  Parking will not be available on the south side of W. 125th Street from Broadway to the mid-block in front of the entire length of the 600 W. 125th Street construction fence.
