In a time when they are needed the most, New York nonprofits are facing grave uncertainty from the impact of COVID-19. Many Columbia Community Service (CCS) grantees are on the front lines, providing aid to the most vulnerable in Morningside Heights and Harlem. Non-profit revenue streams from fundraising events, classes, and ticket sales have dried up while the demand for services continues to escalate.  Here are two ways to make a difference:

Donate

Many CCS grantees such as the Harlem School of the Arts and The Harlem Chamber Players have been forced to cancel spring programs. These organizations provide enrichment and wellness programs to children and the elderly and need financial support to migrate their work to various virtual platforms.

If you are a member of the Columbia University community, you can assist immediately by visiting the CCS website and donating a gift to the Columbia Community Service 73rd Annual Appeal. 100% of your donation will be used to provide grants to community organizations and allow them to continue their critical work. If you are not a member of the Columbia University community, we suggest providing a donation to one of the many CCS Grantees directly.

Volunteer

CCS grantees that provide food services are experiencing an unusually high demand. Organizations such NY Common PantryBroadway CommunityCathedral Community Cares, and West Side Campaign Against Hunger are serving thousands of the neediest of our neighbors every day. These organizations are already expecting a serious short-fall in resources to meet the growing need over the next several months. If you are in a position to lend a hand by volunteering, please contact the organizations listed above directly as their needs change frequently.

Looking for more ways to give back or have any questions? CCS staff is available to answer your questions, feel free to reach out.

The 73rd Annual Appeal for Columbia Community Service is underway at Columbia, Barnard, and Teachers College. Since 1945, CCS has led an annual appeal campaign among employees at these three institutions with 100% of the donations used to fund grants for nonprofit institutions experienced in building sustainable programs.
