MUSIC, MOOD SWINGS AND MADNESS: A PSYCHIATRIC EXPLORATION OF ROBERT SCHUMANN Juilliard trained concert pianist and Harvard educated psychiatrist Dr. Richard Kogan presents a program that explores the connection between the troubled mind and the creative output of the great 19th century German composer Robert Schumann. Dr. Kogan explores how the racing thoughts and sharpened imagination of Schumann’s hypomanic states brought about prodigious bursts of creativity — until the onset of psychosis led to Schumann’s tragic final years in an insane asylum. The program will be illuminated by piano performances of Schumann masterpieces including Carnaval and Fantasy in C. “Through a unique combination of brilliant psychiatric insights and superb musicianship, Richard Kogan presents a rich multidimensional portrait revealing some of the most intimate sources of Schumann’s enormous creativity, imagination and artistry” -Yo-Yo Ma
