These investigations are part of a routine process of gathering information for planning and design. Test borings involve drilling a 4-inch diameter hole beneath the ground to extract soil samples and determine the depth of ground water and rock. Test pits involve the trenching of 3’ x 5’ trenches to validate the existing utilities and to provide the New York City Department of Environmental Protection with assurances that the proposed project utility design is accurate. Through 2009, Columbia University will be performing additional geotechnical borings and test pits investigations to identify the existing utilities and to test load bearing capacities.
